You're engaged! You've got the date set and a sparkly ring on your finger.
Now it's time for arguably one of the most fun things about getting married... the dress shopping experience!
Suzanne brings a knowledgeable perspective to alterations. Having owned her own bridal boutique (Suzanne's Bridal) for many years, she knows the excitement of shopping for a gown. She also knows what to keep in mind for the alteration process. So today, she's sharing some of her best tips.
Alterations are not included in the price of your gown
When factoring your budget keep in mind that the majority of the time alterations are not included in the cost of the gown. Most brides spend between $300-600 on their alterations not including custom buildup.

You can choose where to get your gown altered
You might feel like you are obligated to get your alterations done at the boutique you purchased at. But remember it is your gown and you can choose where to go. You want to feel 100% comfortable with who you choose for your alterations.
Gowns can usually be taken down but can’t always be let out as much.
Sometimes brides get so excited about finding a gown on sale but forget to factor in alterations. If the gown is more than 1-2 sizes too big, keep in mind your alterations will be on the higher end.
If you have to let the gown out, we can usually do 1-2 sizes. More than that may require a corset back or gussets added to the gown.
Things that can change the cost of your alterations:
mesh necklines or illusion backs
custom changes like building up a neckline or adding sleeves
drastic change in size
detailed lace and beading on hem of gown

Timeframe Considerations
we suggest starting alterations at least twelve weeks before your wedding. Keep that in mind when you are ordering your gown. During our slower months we can sometimes accommodate a faster alterations process. If you have any questions, give us a call.
ordering fabrics should be done at the time you order your gown if you want it to match exactly to your gown. Suzanne can source some fabrics for you. But it is often much easier for you to order the fabric from the designer through your gown store.
We'd love to work with you on your alterations. Our brides constantly tell us how much more excited about their gown and their wedding day they are after seeing their gown with the necessary alterations.
